Saturday was one of the most historic and shocking days ever in the NBA as the Dallas Mavericks traded franchise superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for big man Anthony Davis.
Considering Luka just took them to the NBA Finals last season, no one saw this coming. But, GM Nico Harrison clearly had a vision to become a more defensive-minded team by bringing in an impactful two-way player like AD.
On Monday, the Mavericks honored Doncic with a heart-wrenching tribute video on X where fans in the comments couldn't hold back their feelings.
Pain so much pain

Some fans were expressing their anger with the franchise as well:
MFFL right???! That’s how you treat the fanbase tho?? pic.twitter.com/9zk5wKus8y

The fact you guys took a little under 36 hours to get a video together is sad sad work. Karma is not a fun thing to deal with, so I hope your team is ready to deal with the consequences of doing your franchise player dirty

This trade still doesn't feel real. While Luka Doncic has been injured quite a bit this season, there's no sugarcoating his impact since joining the franchise.
The Mavericks traded for the Slovenian on draft day in 2018 and he quickly showed why that was the right move. He holds the franchise record in triple-doubles and has also scored the most points by any Dallas player in a single season, even more than a legend like Dirk Nowitzki. Sure, maybe Luka isn't the best defender but he can truly do it all offensively.
This team was never seen as a Finals contender last season yet Doncic took them to the doorstep of the Promised Land. The guard revealed in a social media post on Sunday that he truly believed he'd spend this whole career in Dallas and also thanked the fans for their amazing support:
“For a young kid from Slovenia coming to the U.S. for the first time, you made North Texas feel like home,” Doncic wrote. “In good times and bad, from injuries to the NBA Finals, your support never changed. Thank you not only for sharing my joy in our best moments, but also for lifting me up when I needed it most.”
Mavericks fans are deservingly sad, but let's hope Davis can bring them something to cheer about.
