The Dallas Mavericks suffered a 128-102 defeat on Thursday against the Phoenix Suns. But, not all is lost for the Mavs after Thursday's blowout defeat. The Mavs are finishing the season with a 43-32 record which is good for a .573 win percentage which effectively locks them in for the 18th pick in this year's NBA draft.
In addition to the 18th pick this year, which is scheduled to be in October, Dallas also has the 31st pick this year as a result of a trade with the Golden State Warriors.
Obviously, this year's draft is far from Dallas' priorities right now given that they've cemented their spot in this year's playoffs. They've shocked the world and propelled themselves to the seventh spot in the West en route to their first playoff appearance since 2016. But, having two solid picks this year is a great option for the Mavs to keep in their back pocket, wherever they see themselves ending the season at.
It's important to note that due to the Kristaps Porzingis trade in 2019, the franchise has given up their first round picks in 2021 or 2023 so having the 18th and 31st pick this year would huge additions for an already impressive young core for the Mavs. Plus, the capability to bring in fresh talent given the possibilities of a dip in the upcoming salary cap given everything going on right now will be nothing but beneficial for Dallas.
Article Continues BelowWith an impending playoff appearance, a glowing young tandem in Porzingis and reigning ROTY Luka Doncic plus solid spots in this year's NBA draft, it seems that all signs point upwards for the Dallas Mavericks.
