The Dallas Mavericks were so close to taking Game 1 from the Utah Jazz without Luka Doncic. While the Mavs' superstar was sidelined with a calf injury, his supporting cast lost to Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and company in the opening game of their first-round NBA playoffs series. After pulling it to a one-point game with two minutes remaining, they failed to convert their shots and took the loss.

Dallas couldn't finish the job and now will have to bounce back to even the series. Doncic's status will be huge to monitor, as keeping up with the Jazz's strong offense will be very tough without their All-Star.

Mavs head coach Jason Kidd gave reporters a pretty vague update on Doncic. The first-year coach said that Doncic being on the court is positive and that they will see how he does tomorrow.

Doncic got some shots up at practice but otherwise kept his activity minimal. Since he is not wearing a walking boot, the Mavs star could be ready in the next few games. He is dying to get back to playing, especially when the games mean more. For the time being, he will continue cheering his teammates on and encouraging them.

With Doncic possibility unable to go, Spencer Dinwiddie and Jalen Brunson will have to step up big-time. Although Dallas has a homecourt advantage for this series, they need Luka Doncic to carry the offense. Without him, their odds against the Jazz are significantly worse.

The Mavs host the Jazz for Game 2 on Monday evening.
