The NBA world was in shambles early Sunday morning when the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Nobody saw this trade coming, and at first, people thought it was fake until ESPN's Shams Charania doubled down on the trade details.
Apparently, there was something building behind the scenes between the Mavericks and Doncic, and before the Lakers even got a hand on the trade, there was another team that the Mavs went to so they could trade Doncic, according to The Athletic's Sam Amick.
“The Mavericks were greatly concerned with Dončić’s durability — or lack thereof — and convinced his approach to the game would continue to be a problem in the years to come,” Amick wrote. “Yet while there was no shortage of teams that expressed shock at the fact that the Mavericks didn’t broadcast their willingness to move Dončić, league sources say there was at least one team besides the Lakers that was approached by Dallas nearly two weeks ago about the prospect of swapping Dončić for another star.

“That bid was turned down, but the message sent in the process had been clear: There was trouble brewing in Dallas. And the Lakers, in the end, were the ones who reaped the benefits.”
For years, the one thing that most people have noticed is that Doncic doesn't have the best conditioning, but he still finds a way to be one of the most impactful players on the court. The Mavericks seemed like they were worried things would get worse before they got better and wanted to get ahead of the situation. That caused one of the biggest trades that has probably ever happened in NBA history.
The mystery team hasn't been revealed now, but it would be interesting to see if the word ever comes on who else tried to acquire Doncic.
