Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone has weighed in on the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting on May 7.
According to ESPN's Rachel Nichols, the shooting occurred just two minutes from Malone's residence in Denver. Even though his children don't attend STEM School Highlands Ranch, they were terrified, nonetheless.

His kids don’t go to that school, but they were scared, as kids in this country have to be every single day, knowing that they could walk into school and be murdered. pic.twitter.com/zEHV2zNdag

Nichols' colleague at ESPN, Ohm Youngmisuk, says Malone's wife, Jocelyn, called him to inform him about the shooting. Malone received the call while he and the Nuggets were preparing for Game 5 of their second-round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers at Pepsi Center.
Malone told Youngmisuk Tuesday's shooting is part of a nationwide “epidemic.” He also wished the victims and their families well.
It's not just Highlands Ranch. It's not just Colorado. This is an epidemic. And it continues to happen. And that is the frustrating thing.
How do you stop it? Again, gun control, laws, whatever it might be. I am not a politician. I don't want to sit up here on a soap box.
I just want everybody back at Highlands Ranch to know that we're with you and that is very important for them to know.
The Nuggets and their fans observed a moment of silence before the game against the Blazers, per ESPN.

Youngmisuk notes this is the second time in the past few weeks Colorado schools closed down because of a shooting threat. Three weeks ago, police tracked down a Florida woman who was infatuated with the Columbine school shooting incident.
The said woman purchased a shotgun which forced local school authorities to close down their campuses. The police found her dead in an apparent suicide on April 17, per Youngmisuk.
Ironically, the STEM Highlands Ranch campus is just a few miles away from Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Twenty years ago, two gunmen killed 12 of their fellow students and a teacher at Columbine High, per ESPN.
