When asked by Harrison Wind of BSNDenver.com about how the Denver Nuggets' point guard rotation would look like in the coming season, head coach Mike Malone spoke as though he’s Stephen Hawking talking about the mysteries of the uncharted regions of the vast universe.

“It’s a dilemma, wrapped in an enigma, inside a labyrinth, if you will,” Malone said as Denver wrapped up practice Saturday and departed Pepsi Center for an afternoon flight to San Antonio where they’ll take on the Spurs on Sunday.

The 2017-18 season is set to start in a little over a week from now but Malone has yet to pencil in his team’s starting point guard. Malone has three options for that. One is 35-year-old veteran Jameer Nelson, the other is second-year player Jamal Murray, and then there’s third-year guard Emmanuel Mudiay.

Mudiay was drafted in 2015 with the Nuggets thinking they could groom him to become the team’s regular point guard, but his erratic ways and shooting woes have made it hard for him to get a solid grip on the starting role. Murray, meanwhile, is a better offensive player than Mudiay and has shined in games this preseason. However, Nelson comes with the most experience, which a playoff-spot-seeking Nuggets team could definitely find useful.

The preseason is supposed to help Mike Malone come down with a final decision, but both Mudiay and Murray have impressed in their respective turns alongside the first unit. Nelson will get his first preseason start this Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs, and if he comes up with a fantastic performance as well, then Malone’s headache should get even more intense.

The point guard battle in Denver is far from over.
