Entering the Rio Olympics, Kevin Durant was the undisputed best player for Team USA. He still is, and he proved that in their last game against Argentina.

The team had a really tough stretch in the last three games of the group stages, casting doubt on whether this crop of NBA All-Stars can live up to what their predecessors have started. But the lone former MVP of this team found his touch once again, just in the right time.

In Michael Lee’s article for The Vertical, Durant asserted his role in the team.

“That was who I was supposed to be. No matter if it would’ve happened or not, I felt I was supposed to be a star. Aggressive player on the team. I’m supposed to score. I always felt that was me. I was brought up that way. I was raised that way.”

“When you’re looking at the game of basketball, it’s about ‘the guy.’ Who is the No. 1 guy? The leader? Who’s the alpha? All that stuff.”

He was all over the floor in Team USA’s romp over Argentina, ending the night with 27 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

The Americans will be tested in their next battle against the Spaniards for a ticket to the gold medal match, but Kevin Durant will be ready to strike.
