The Milwaukee Bucks ended their search for a new coach earlier this week with the hiring of former Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer. Now, Budenholzer has all the time in the world to coach the player he could’ve started mentoring a long time ago. That player is no other hand Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst of ESPN suggested was heavily targeted by the Hawks back in the 2013 NBA Draft.

The two touched on the subject during a recent episode of The Woj Pod. Here’s a brief transcript of the exchange between the two during the podcast, via Dan Feldman of NBC Sports.

Wojnarowski: “That night with Giannis, Atlanta was really – Brian, you both know this. Atlanta was really determined to get him.”

Windhorst: “Oh, yes. I’ve listened to Danny Ferry’s sob story about this one.”

Wojnarowski: “Danny Ferry, Wes Wilcox were really focused on him.”

Back then, the Hawks were still under the watch of a front office that had Danny Ferry and Wes Wilcox, who were at the time Atlanta’s general manager and the assistant general manager, respectively.

Giannis Antetokounmpo wounded up getting selected 15th overall by the Bucks, while the Hawks settled with Dennis Schroder at No. 17. Schroder turned out to be a good pick, but the Hawks arguably would have been better had they selected Antetokounmpo.

In any case, Budenholzer finally has a chance to work with a generational talent like Antetokounmpo — in a different city.

Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are coming off a 44-38 season in which they made the playoffs for the second year in a row.
