The Los Angeles Lakers unveiled Anthony Davis’s number and jersey during the 26-year-old’s introductory press conference on Saturday.

General Manager Rob Pelinka, new head coach Frank Vogel and luminary teammate LeBron James were all present at this fateful occasion. One notable change for the new Lakers superstar is that he will no longer be wearing No. 23 for the Lakers, as that number belongs to James and due to “production issues,” new No. 23 AD jersey could not be made in time.

This, frankly, sounds like a fairly unreasonable excuse, and Davis himself weighed in on not being able to wear his preferred number per Ben Golliver of the Washington Post:

While deeming not wearing a certain item of clothing as “hurtful” seems a tad excessive, clearly Davis cares about what number he wears – so much so that King James was actually willing to give up his #No. 3 jersey to Davis, but those aforementioned “production issues” stopped that from happening.

In the end, Davis opted for No. 3 as his jersey choice, but let’s hope that this botched jersey swap doesn’t lead to Davis rethinking his decision to re-sign with the Lakers when his contract is up next offseason. Davis was not willing to commit to L.A. long-term when questioned during his presser, so that’s something to monitor going forward.

No matter what number he’s wearing, Davis is sure to bring his best effort to the Lakers, who’ve remade the roster around him and his new teammate James. With a bevy of veterans and two superstars, expectations for the Lakers are high.
