The midseason addition of Andre Drummond to the Los Angeles Lakers was interesting, to say the least. To be more succinct about it, it can be summarized using a single definitive word: Meh.
Drummond suited up a total of 26 games, including the NBA Playoffs, in his first stint with the Lakers. In the regular season, he averaged 11.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks in less than 25 minutes per game. Not bad, actually. But if viewed through the prism of being a game-changer for the Purple & Gold as he was perceived to be, he didn't exactly fill that role.
The obvious question now: Will Drummond return? Lakers coach Frank Vogel recently said he hopes Drummond will be with the team “for life.” Vogel's boss Rob Pelinka, however, was more non-committal (via Lakers Nation).
“I think Andre’s time here was really good, we had a great exit interview today and just talked about the fact that of course, he had a couple of months where he didn’t play until we got here and there was a process of onboarding and getting in shape and getting acclimated to the guys. But we’re proud of some of the big games and big moments he had along the way both in the regular season and in the playoffs and really appreciate his choosing the Lakers and the contributions he made with us.”
Drummond had an extended hiatus before he was picked up by the Lakers, as he was held out by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Being in limbo obviously didn't help the two-time All-Star.
While his truncated stint with the Lakers was subpar, it would be logical for the squad to retain Andre Drummond and see him play a full season alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
