Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis can become an unrestricted free agent next summer if he declines his 2020-21 player option with the Lakers.

Davis is widely expected to decline his $28.8 million player option since he can make more money on the open market.

At Lakers media day on Friday, Davis addressed his upcoming free agency with reporters:

It would shock a lot of people around the league if Anthony Davis doesn’t re-sign with the Lakers. LeBron James signed a four-year deal with Los Angeles last offseason. James has a player option for the 2021-22 season, one which he will likely pick up unless something changes in LA.

LeBron and Davis, of course, have the same agent — Rich Paul of Klutch Sports.

Davis, one of the best players in the game, has career averages of 23.7 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists. The new Lakers star has the third-best player efficiency rating in NBA history at 27.42. LeBron is second at 27.59.

AD has only been past the first round of the playoffs once. With the Lakers, AD is hoping to win a championship this upcoming season and cash in on a lucrative contract next summer.

For the New Orleans Pelicans in 2018-19, Davis put up 25.9 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.4 blocks in 56 games. The six-time All-Star shot 51.7 percent from the floor, 33.1 percent from the 3-point line and 79.4 percent from the charity stripe.
