If the Los Angeles Lakers truly want to get Anthony Davis via a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, Magic Johnson and company will have to mortgage the future. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Pelicans want four first-round picks and more from the Lakers for such a deal to push through.

Over the past week or so social media has been buzzing over Anthony Davis's trade request. The Lakers have been fighting hard for his services, and New Orleans Pelicans GM Dell Demps knows this.

Although the Lakers have already agreed to give up their trio of young players in Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Kyle Kuzma, attaching that many picks to the deal would exhaust the Lakers assets. In reality, this would be the grandfather offer. If Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka are willing and able to pull the trigger, this would be the cost for acquiring a superstar under contract like Davis.

The Pelicans can make this kind of ultimatum because they have the leverage here. They can wait out until the offseason and then deal with the Boston Celtics. They have a better core of young players and more draft picks to hand out.

However, unless Kyrie Irving agrees to sign an extension with the team, Davis cannot be acquired. Since they both signed their rookie extensions under the Rose Rule, they cannot play on the same team. Boston would have to wait for Irving to be a free agent.

Additionally, it's becoming more unclear whether or not Irving will stay. The New York Knicks traded away Kristaps Porzingis among others to clear two open max slots. Would Irving and another superstar, potentially Durant, play with the Knicks?

The Lakers have the chance to grab Davis. But it will take all they have to acquire him. Whether it's worth it to them remains to be seen.
