The Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka regime with the Los Angeles Lakers has already been penalized twice for tampering, and ahead of the upcoming free agency period, they are focused on ensuring that it doesn't happen again.

According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, Lakers co-owner and governor Jeanie Buss put together a meeting with every employee in the organization to discuss what can be constituted as tampering and how to avoid it. Johnson, the president of basketball operations for the Lakers since February of 2017, reportedly led the meeting.

With superstar free agents LeBron James and Paul George possibly on the line, the franchise is not messing around. From Shelburne:

Other employees received written notices on the matter that referenced possible termination as punishment for anyone who does not adhere to NBA rules.

The Lakers were first fined $500,000 in August of 2017 after evidence surfaced revealing a conversation between Rob Pelinka and George's agent despite a previous tampering warning. A much smaller $50,000 fine was given to Johnson for his public praise of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Given their previous violations, the Lakers didn't want to leave any stone unturned. Here's what one team source told Shelburne:

“We are under incredible scrutiny with everything, so Jeanie and Earvin had to make this crystal, crystal clear to everyone.”

It is vital for the Lakers to land at least one max-player in free agency this summer. The decorated franchise has missed the playoffs for five straight seasons, easily the longest such drought in their history.
