There are now 15 Black head coaches in the NBA after the Los Angeles Lakers hired Darvin Ham, but Commissioner Adam Silver knows the work is far from over.
Silver did express his delight that diversity is being embraced in the NBA and everyone given a fair chance with their skills; however, he shared his belief that they still have a lot of things to do given the fact that having 50 percent Black head coaches remains a major talking point and a news headliner.
“While I'm particularly proud of those numbers and roughly 50 percent of our head coaches are Black now, the goal is that [it's] not newsworthy,” Silver said, per NBA on ESPN.
Now that is certainly a strong and powerful statement from Adam Silver. The fact of the matter is it remains hard for Black coaches to make it to the top coaching ranks, which is why it remains a big deal.

Silver is not alone in his sentiment as well. For one, Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown recently shared his confusion why it took so long for the league to have the record-breaking number of Black coaches when a majority of its players are Black.
“If you’re asking me, I don’t know why it took so long,” Brown said on the number of Black coaches getting into the NBA.
There's work to be done for sure, but the NBA is certainly in the right direction.
