The bright spots for the Dallas Mavericks have been few and far in-between so far in the 2017-18 NBA season. Fortunately, fans have at least been able to relish in what could be the final games of superstar Dirk Nowitzki.
Although Nowitzki's future in the NBA is still uncertain, it is safe to assume that is days are numbered. Regardless, small forward Harrison Barnes says Nowitzki will be the Mavs' franchise player until he retires, according to Eddie Sefko of SportsDay.com:
“I said when I very first signed here that this is Dirk’s franchise until the day he retires for everything he’s done. Without him, I wouldn’t be here.”

Barnes has stuck to this notion ever since he signed with Dallas prior to the 2016-17 NBA season. That said, Nowitzki's status as the franchise player has largely become more of a ceremonial role as of late with the 13-time All-Star in the midst of his worst statistical season since his rookie year.
It is a nice sentiment from Barnes, especially considering he has arguably solidified his role as the next face of this franchise whenever Nowitzki does, in fact, decide to retire. However, given his current health and the undying support of Mavs owner Mark Cuban, it is not far-fetched to think Nowitzki could play another year.
