The Memphis Grizzlies have had a season of upheaval after drafting Jaren Jackson Jr. 4th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, attempting to make a run at the Western Conference Playoffs, falling short, then trading away one of the franchise’s cornerstones in Marc Gasol to the Toronto Raptors at the trade deadline.

Since that trade, however, the Grizzlies have been surprisingly feisty, with longtime point guard Mike Conley playing terrific basketball.

The Grizz have gone 7-9 since the All-Star break, which was a vast improvement on the team’s terrible 4-18 mark after January 1 and leading into the All-Star festivities.

One new acquisition for this Grizzlies team this season was rookie Jevon Carter, who was drafted early in the second round in the 2018 draft with the 32nd overall pick. Coming into the draft, Carter was known as a defensive specialist at the guard position, where he was tutored under Huggy Bear (West Virginia University men’s basketball head coach Bob Huggins).

So far that reputation has been upheld at the NBA level, as Carter has 0.6 defensive win shares and holds a 108 defensive rating – which is identical to the Grizzlies offensive rating as a team and is good enough for 9th in the NBA among all teams, according to Basketball Reference.

The Grizz announced today that Carter has been recalled from the team’s G-League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle:

With only 7 games remaining on the team’s schedule, it seems that Carter will get a decent run to end his rookie season.
