New Miami Heat addition Jimmy Butler claims he will “most definitely” consider playing for Team USA for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, according to Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press. Other stars like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Donovan Mitchell are among the group already saying they want in on the upcoming opportunity.
Butler was notably a member of the USA Basketball squad that took gold in the 2016 Rio Olympics, making his contributions coming off the bench. Butler also took part in the tryouts for the 2014 World Cup, but wound up pulling out of consideration due to an injury.
Many stars have already raised their hands in hopes of having a shot for consideration after many turned down the opportunity to participate in the 2019 FIBA World Cup, where the Americans finished seventh — their worst placement since NBA players were allowed to take part in international competition.

Yet managing director Jerry Colangelo warned he will remember those who turned down a chance to participate, vowing to be very selecting in the process ahead of the Olympic run.
If taken into consideration, Butler will be competing against some of the best wings in the game, including Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Thompson, and likely others. While he offers a great two-way approach, Butler's long-range shooting — a tool Team USA direly needed in this past competition — isn't the most formidable in his arsenal, which could make him a cut candidate over the three aforementioned with much stronger acumen.
