Jimmy Butler missed the game but he wasn’t going to miss out congratulating his longtime teammate on his career night. Derrick Rose was being interviewed by the press after scoring a career-high 50 points against the Utah Jazz when Butler walked in and gave him a shout out.

“Way to get your 50, boy,” Butler shouted from a distance. “That’s what I’m talking about, yeah! My bad, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

It was Butler’s way of letting Rose know how happy he was for his teammate. Though he didn’t play this night, the 6-foot-7 swingman was in the building.

On Wednesday, Rose carried the Minnesota Timberwolves to victory against a very tough Jazz team that was determined to win this road game, and they had every opportunity to do so. The Wolves were playing without two of their stars, Butler and Andrew Wiggins, and everyone thought that the game was going to be a walk in the park for Utah.

What no one considered was how much Rose wanted to win.

Rose and Butler were teammates during their time as members of the Chicago Bulls. That team was a grind it out, tough-as-nails defensive team that relied heavily on contributions from both players to win. During their time together, the Bulls made it to the postseason four times while missing the playoffs once.

They became teammates once more in March after the Timberwolves signed Rose as a free agent after the Cleveland Cavaliers’ housecleaning in February. He re-signed with the team in June for a reported one-year deal worth $2.1 million.
