NBA fans have already witnessed several blowouts just a week after the start of the 2020-21 season. With the Dallas Mavericks demolishing the Los Angeles Clippers by an astonishing 51 points and the Brooklyn Nets getting 20-plus point wins against teams like the Boston Celtics, the question of why this is happening so frequently must be asked. Fortunately, Portland Trail Blazers star guard Damian Lillard believes he has the answer.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports, Lillard expressed what he felt about the blowout situation taking the league by storm.

With COVID-19 preventing fans from bringing their energy and noise to the arena, a source of fuel for many NBA players, Damian Lillard emphasized that players are still adjusting to the desolate arenas and how they will have to produce their own energy throughout the season.

It can not be an easy transition for some teams, going from sold-out arenas to thousands of empty seats sucking the energy from out of the court. However, the reality is that teams like the Blazers will need to find new ways of getting out of slumps and changing momentum if they do not want to be outplayed by opponents that generate energy from the bench, coaching staff, and even from players on the court.

Until the arenas allow for fans to come in and cheer for their teams, players must follow the mindset of the Blazers star. The NBA will not hear the loud cheering of when someone gets dunked on or when a buzzer-beater is hit to win the game for a while. Therefore, the sooner teams figure out a way to get going and energize themselves, blowouts will no longer be as common as fans are seeing right now.
