As the league carries on with its stringent contact tracing efforts to battle the spread of the dreaded coronavirus, it has been reported that Monday night's matchup between the New Orleans Pelicans and the San Antonio Spurs has just been postponed.

This report comes straight via NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic:

Earlier in the week, the league announced that it had decided to push back the tip-off time of this matchup, presumably still relating to the NBA's health and safety protocols. That development hinted at the game possibly being postponed, which unsurprisingly, is exactly what the league has decided on.

The Pelicans have had an awful start to the new year with the team losing eight out of the 10 games it has played in 2021. They are also coming off a six-game road trip wherein they were only able to secure just one victory. New Orleans came into Monday's postponed matchup following three straight defeats and were in desperate need of a win against San Antonio.

The Pelicans are scheduled for three more games this week with a bout against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday followed by a back-to-back set against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Houston Rockets on Friday and Saturday, respectively. All are home games for New Orleans. At this point, however, it remains to be seen if any of those contests will be postponed.

As for the Spurs, they were in action on Sunday in a 121-101 win against the Washington Wizards. Incidentally, that was the first time the Wizards took the court after having no less than six of its previous games postponed due to health and safety protocols. It is unclear if this is related to the league's decision to postpone Monday's game between the Pels and the Spurs.
