Darius Miller is expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season due to a torn Achilles he suffered a month ago. Because of the this, the New Orleans Pelicans have applied for a disabled player exception for their injured forward, per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium:

The Pelicans would be able to sign a player worth half of Miller's salary, which would be at $3.625 million. The exception could also be used for a trade or waiver claim, but with similar salary limitations and other rules applying.

New Orleans re-signed the 6-foot-8 forward to a two-year, $14.25 million contract this offseason.

In 69 games last season, the 3-point specialist averaged 8.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists across 25.5 minutes per game. He shot 39 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Miller would have been a perfect fit as a stellar spot-up shooter for New Orleans. Unfortunately, with his injury, the Pelicans will have to look elsewhere to find some additional shooting.

The market for free agents still has some intriguing names such as Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith, Joakim Noah, and Jamal Crawford, to name a few. Perhaps one of those veterans could slide in and give the young Pelicans a decent scoring boost off the bench.

The Pelicans have plenty of hope this upcoming season. They have a bevy of exciting young players led by this year's No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson and incumbent starting guard Jrue Holiday. In addition to their trio of young stars in Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart, they have also surrounded their young franchise centerpiece with solid veterans in JJ Redick and Derrick Favors.
