With the streaking Boston Celtics hosting the visiting Atlantic Division rival New York Knicks at home Friday night, fourth-year swingman Jaylen Brown is out, per The Athletic's Jared Weiss.
The former third-overall selection of the 2016 NBA Draft is battling an illness that prevented him from playing in the Celtics' showdown with the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, an eleven-point home victory for Boston over Giannis Antetokounmpo and company, who knocked them out of the playoffs last season.
Article Continues BelowBrown recently signed a massive contract extension with the club towards the end of October; a four-year, $107 million deal to keep the 6-foot-6 University of California, Berkeley product in Beantown. Through three regular-season games with the C's this season, he is averaging 17.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game—all career bests in the small sample size.
The Celtics will also miss centers Robert Williams and Enes Kanter—the latter played for the Knicks from 2017-19 before being released last February and playing the remainder of the season with the Portland Trail Blazers. Kanter (left knee contusion) missed last Friday's matchup against the Knicks in the Big Apple, too, a game Boston won after finding a second-half grooving and cruising to victory in a brilliant fourth quarter. That win in New York kicked off their current three-game winning streak.
The depleted Boston team faces the Knicks, who lost on Wednesday to the Orlando Magic on the road after picking up their first win at home against the Chicago Bulls. The Celtics can expect their starting point guard Kemba Walker to be matched up with third-year French guard Frank Ntilikina, a defensive-minded opponent who in part helped the French national team unseating Walker and Team USA in September in the 2019 FIBA World Cup quarter-finals round in China.
