As the New York Knicks continue their offseason of uncertainty regarding their future, many are starting to believe that the option to “tank” next season may very much be in play for the Knicks in order to have a significant chance at the number one overall pick. One name they're already looking at is projected top prospect Michael Porter Jr.

In a piece by Marc Berman of the New York Post, he cited that no one from the Knicks wants to use that term, but rather prefers former Philadelphia 76ers GM Sam Hinkie’s now-popular motto “trust the process” instead.

“Nobody from the Knicks organization — especially coach Jeff Hornacek — will use the word ‘tanking’ about next season, but if it smells like former Sixers general managers Sam Hinkie’s signature “Process,’’ it likely is.”

Berman also quoted a team executive that recently spoke to the Knicks, who said they indeed believe in the youth movement and would like to build around their young players.

“The focus is on young players but they still need some veteran presence. They’re waiting to see where there are good young players that would take shorter deals. The focus is definitely on building around young guys.’’

Porter is a five star recruit out of high school who has committed to play for University of Missouri. At 6-foot-10, he can play both forward spots and also versatile enough to play center depending on matchups. He is expected to be another one-and-done prospect that would declare for the draft next year. Should that happen, NBA teams with losing records can look forward to adding a very talented big man, who can be a franchise-changer to whichever team he'll end up with. The Knicks apparently are already are intrigued by that prospect, and may not mind losing a lot of games this coming season, knowing that the reward could very well be Porter.
