Article Continues BelowKnicks coach David Fizdale says he challenged Kevin Knox to provide some leadership to Mitchell Robinson, who did not attend college last season. Fizdale says at a team town hall meeting that Knox, who played for one year at Kentucky, has taken on that leadership role with Robinson.
Knox, the ninth overall pick by the Knicks in the 2018 draft, played just one year for the Kentucky Wildcats where he logged in 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. He led the team to the SEC championship where he pretty much established himself as one of the top NBA prospects.
Robinson, meanwhile, opted to take a different path to the NBA. He enrolled at Western Kentucky University but was suspended for violating team rules and subsequently sat out 2017-18 NCAA Division I basketball season. Instead of waiting out the suspension, Robinson decided to forgo college and trek his own path to the NBA. Eventually, the 7-foot-1 center was selected 36th overall by the Knicks.
Slowly and surely, it seems that the Knicks are paving the foundation for the future. The past several years have been disappointing for New York — home to the mecca of basketball. Assigning a rookie to mentor a fellow first-year player is a bold move by Fizdale. Hopefully, it will pay off.
