The New York Knicks have exercised their option on guard Allonzo Trier for next season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. Trier will earn $3.5 million in 2019-20.

Trier is coming off a very impressive rookie campaign in which he played 64 games and averaged 10.9 points and 3.1 rebounds over 22.8 minutes per game while shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, 39.4 percent from 3-point range and 80.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate basketball at the University of Arizona, went undrafted but signed a two-way contract with the Knicks last summer.

After an impressive preseason, New York decided to give Trier some regular minutes at the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign, and he made the most of it, showing very solid ability on the offensive end of the court.

Trier spent three seasons at Arizona, with his best year coming during his junior campaign when he averaged 18.1 points, 3.2 assists and 3.0 boards across 34.1 minutes a night while making 50.0 percent of his field goal attempts, 38.0 percent of his long-distance tries and 86.5 percent of his free throws.

However, he was then ruled ineligible for his senior season by the NCAA as a result of testing positive for a banned substance, marking his second such suspension in college.

He then decided to enter the NBA Draft.

The Knicks won just 17 games this past season, equaling their lowest win total in franchise history. New York has not made the playoffs since the 2012-13 campaign and has not posted a single winning season since then.

The Knicks own the third overall pick in the draft later this month.
