The New York Knicks will give undrafted rookie Kris Wilkes one more chance amid concerns about his health.
The 20-year-old Wilkes played for two years in UCLA before entering the 2019 Draft. Although he was not picked by an NBA team, the Knicks offered him a two-way contract — to which Wilkes verbally agreed to sign. Unfortunately, recent reports surfaced that the Knickerbockers would void the deal due to injury.
However, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post, New York is not ready to give up just yet and will summon the 6-foot-8 swingman in the next two weeks to conduct another physical exam.
The Knicks have not fully closed the door on signing rookie Kris Wilkes for the start of training camp, according to multiple sources.
While it still appears doubtful the UCLA product will be ruled healthy enough, the club has decided to summon Wilkes for another physical in the next two weeks before completely ruling him out, reconsidering an earlier stance.
This is certainly Wilkes last chance to prove he can suit up for the rebuilding Knicks squad. New York undoubtedly wants the 20-year-old, but they know they can't waste their second two-way contract to a player who is not fit to play.
New York will look to prove their doubters wrong this upcoming season. After failing to land a big fish in free agency, the Knicks are hoping that their group of unproven players will step up and lead them to the playoffs.
Wilkes could find an opportunity with the team, but he needs to prove he can help.
