New York Knicks general manager Scott Perry is hoping to make this a gradual transition for the team's prized unicorn Kristaps Porzingis.

Perry told Alan Hahn of MSG that he wants the organization to be “very aggressive in trying to make this team as competitive as possible as quick as we can. But we want to do it the right way,” according to ESPN's Ian Begley.

In the wake of Carmelo Anthony's trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Porzingis will take on the mantle of being the team's star player, but Perry isn't hoping for an overnight installment of a Superman cape, but rather let him get acclimated to becoming the No. 1 option.

“I never want to put that much pressure on one individual,” said Perry. “He knows that he needs every one of his teammates to help this team be successful.”

Porzingis improved his scoring average after his rookie year, putting up 18.1 points per game along with 7.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in his second season with the team. He will continue to play at power forward, while newcomer Enes Kanter battles with starter Willy Hernangomez, Kyle O'Quinn, Luke Kornet, and a suspended Joakim Noah for the starting job at center.
