The New York Knicks will take a rather conservative approach coming into this offseason, not expected to make many moves, but rather work on a potential new system under new coach David Fizdale.
This rather passive offseason could spell the end of two of their veteran signings from 2016, according to Al Iannazzone of Newsday.
“Their plan is to not sign anyone to long-term deals and to shed contracts that have more than one year remaining. That means Courtney Lee and Joakim Noah might not be Knicks much longer.”
The Knicks are likely to do a stretch-and-waive for Noah, while Lee is a much easier out with only $25 million left over the next two years of his contract, still a serviceable veteran with good defensive abilities and a decent shot.
New York will try to free up as much salary cap space as possible for a big 2019 free agency, where the Knicks will have a shot at stars like Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard, Kemba Walker, and Kevin Love.
Much of the Knicks future hinges on how franchise star Kristaps Porzingis recovers from his ACL surgery and how he bounces back from injury upon his impending return.
Fizdale will likely try to instill his culture on the roster's young players, making these veteran likely expendable with this new front office plan.
