Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is expected to receive interest from the New York Knicks in free agency, per Ian Begley of SNY.
Caldwell-Pope is an unrestricted free agent after declining his 2020-21 player option with the Los Angeles Lakers, who won the 2020 title over the Miami Heat in six games at Walt Disney World in the NBA bubble.
Teams monitoring Kentavious Caldwell Pope's free agency expect New York to have interest, SNY has learned.
During the 2019-20 season for the Lakers, Caldwell-Pope averaged 9.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 46.7 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from beyond the arc and 77.5 percent from the free-throw line.
You would have to think that Caldwell-Pope is going to meet with the Knicks just to put pressure on the Lakers to re-sign him. After all, why would the veteran leave the world champions to play for the Knicks, who have been a walking disaster for years?
With the Detroit Pistons and Lakers, Caldwell-Pope has compiled averages of 11.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists in the regular season. He's a solid catch-and-shoot player and plays high-level defense when he's asked to. That's probably why the Knicks like him since they are coached by Tom Thibodeau, a defensive-minded coach.
The Knicks haven't made the playoffs since the 2012-13 season. Fans are hoping Thibs and new president of basketball operations Leon Rose can turn the franchise around.
