One of the biggest reasons why the New York Knicks are seemingly bent on letting go of Carmelo Anthony is standing tall at 7-foot-3.

Straight out of Europe, Kristaps Porzingis has impressed in his first two seasons, showing signs of his ability to take over games on both ends of the floor — something which Anthony failed to do so in his stint as a Knick. The young prodigy is brimming with potential that it’s become imperative on the Knicks’ part to give him the earliest exposure possible.

However, given Anthony’s presence in the team, pundits find it hard to imagine Porzingis blossoming into the player that he can be. But the level-headed youngster knows what he needs to do and he isn’t wasting any time.

“I’m trying to learn how to be the guy,” Porzingis told Marc Berman of the New York Post, “how to be the focal point or make a play or create a shot for myself. I’m still working on that, still have a lot to learn. As I keep growing as a player, I have to learn and be better at it.”

“There’s so much to learn. Every time I watch myself play, there’s always something I feel I could do better – not this move, (but) I should’ve done another move. I’m trying to find what type of player I’ll be.”

For the 21-year-old Latvian international, there is no such thing as a sophomore jinx. He’s upped his averages from his rookie year to 18.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per ballgame.

But despite the early trajectory, Porzingis remains a humble kid amid all the Big Apple attention surrounding him, and he isn’t discounting how he can take parts of Carmelo Anthony’s game to improve his own.

“Strength, that will help me,’’ Porzingis said. “It’s reading the situation better, seeing the court a lot of times. Once I get the ball, all I see is a defender and the basket, that’s it. I got to see the help coming. Melo is very good at that. He always sees the guys coming and waits for the right moment to drive and gets to the basket. It’s one thing I have to learn, not just focused on the basket [and] that’s it. See the court.”
