As the New York Knicks were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Wednesday following their loss to the Miami Heat, they are now left to wonder what went wrong to their once promising season.
One of them is their starting power forward, Kristaps Porzingis who admitted to Fred Kerber of the New York Post that the team did not get things right from the start, and even went as far as saying the Knicks don't have real fundamentals.
“We didn’t do it from the beginning the right way. We didn’t have real fundamentals as a team and I think from the beginning it worked for us because we played based off our talent and based off good energy. Once things got a little tougher, we just didn’t have the fundamentals as a team.”
Porzingis also added that the lack of fundamentals apply to both ends of the floor, which took its toll on them, especially in the late stages of the regular season.
“Obviously, that’s what we needed to do this year and we didn’t do that. We kind of learned some things but not like fully from zero to 100, you know? So it kind of took a little bit of everything and at the end, if you try to do a lot of things average, you’re not going to be great at anything.”
Although this year can be considered as another disastrous one for them, the lessons they learned throughout the season can help them in the future to become a winning franchise once again. With Porzingis understanding what they need to do, it will definitely boost their chances of being successful sooner rather than later.
