Los Angeles Lakers big man Dwight Howard has recently opened up about the challenges he had to go through during his stint with the Orlando Magic. While the 6-foot-10 center is widely regarded as one of the best big men to have ever played for the franchise, it turns out that Howard does not actually have very fond memories about his time in Florida.
According to Howard himself, he was not very happy with the things that transpired behind the scenes. So much so, that he still holds some bitterness against the organization up until this point.
“I was super bitter at a lot of the things that transpired behind closed doors that none of the Magic fans or people really know about,” he said without revealing specifics, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “I never said anything about it. I never bashed or talked anything bad about this team. But I did have a lot of bitterness in my heart towards the organization and even the fans of how they treated me when I came back.”
Howard was selected first overall by the Magic in 2004, and this was where he would spend the first eight seasons of his career. It was a decorated eight years for him in Orlando, and Howard would even carry the team all the way to the NBA Finals in the 2008-09 season. He was later traded to the Lakers and played there for a year before departing again in free agency.
As it turns out, though, there were a lot things happening behind the scenes, and based on his above statement, Howard was obviously unhappy during his time with the team. Nevertheless, Howard chose to take the high road.
“But I let it go. I was super bitter, but I let it go,” he explained. “And by letting it go, it just dropped all the weight that I had and it just made me a better person.”
It has now been eight years since Howard parted ways with the Magic. Obviously, the bitter memories of the past still haunt him to this day.
