New Orleans Pelicans big man DeMarcus Cousins went down with a torn left Achilles during Friday night's 115-113 victory over the Houston Rockets. The injury will likely force the former Kentucky Wildcat to miss the remainder of this season, according to initial reports.

Despite the loss of Cousins, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Pelicans will remain active in the open market before the NBA's Feb. 8 trade deadline.

Exactly who the Pelicans will go after in the trade market remains to be seen, but it sounds like they'll certainly be in the hunt.

Losing Cousins is a downer for Pelicans fans, without question. In the 48 games he has played this season, the former No. 5 pick in the 2010 Draft turned in averages of 25.2 points on 47.0 percent shooting from the field (35.4 percent from beyond the arc), 12.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists.

Cousins, now 27 years of age, is scheduled to have surgery on his damaged Achilles.

“We were starting to play damn good basketball,” Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry told ESPN after Friday's game. “DeMarcus has been great.”

The NBA has already granted the Pelicans a hardship exception this season, as they've been dealing with several injuries. Another could be on the way shortly, however, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

The Pelicans, now 27-21 overall and 3rd in the Southwest Division, will be back in action on Sunday, as they're scheduled to host the L.A. Clippers inside the Smoothie King Center. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. EST with Fox Sports New Orleans having live broadcast coverage.
