Although he may not have been selected for the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, it was still a weekend to remember for Phoenix Suns shooting guard Devin Booker. Not only did Booker win the 3-point contest but he did it in spectacular fashion with a record-breaking 28 points in the championship round to take home the title.
It has even been dubbed as the greatest shooting performance in 3-point contest history. However, it seems the efforts of former NBA player Craig Hodges has been overlooked, according to NBA Redditor ShaneRyan24:
Article Continues BelowWith 20 made in his insane round this weekend, Booker joins elite company in second place. Hodges remains in first with his 1991 performance, but one small mystery remains, and it comes from Craig Hodges' 1986 first-round performance…one of the first attempts in the history of the contest. He scored 25 points in that round, which means he hit a minimum of 20 shots. Unfortunately, we don't know the maximum because video footage is scattershot and inconclusive.
Although Hodges recorded one more made three in 1991, his score did not surpass Booker's due to the contest's rule change to have a rack full of money balls. As a result, the young sharpshooter had been given the edge this time around.
Hodges was one of the most lethal deep threats back in his day. Not surprisingly, he participated in the NBA's first eight 3-point competitions from 1986-1993. Hodges is perhaps the most decorated player in contest history after winning three straight times as a member of the Chicago Bulls from 1990-1993. More importantly, it appears as though his record for makes in the event still has yet to be surpassed.
