The Phoenix Suns may have the second-worst record in the NBA entering Tuesday, but small forward Kelly Oubre Jr. has been enjoying his time with the franchise and wants to come back next season.
Oubre will become a restricted free agent this summer. The Suns acquired the swingman from the Washington Wizards in the Trevor Ariza trade back in December.
As a restricted free agent, Oubre can sign an offer sheet with another team and then the Suns would have 48 hours to match the offer or let him walk. The 23-year-old lefty, though, doesn't plan on leaving Phoenix.
“Why would I go anywhere else?” Oubre told 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Burns & Gambo. “I’m here, I’m getting established and I’m not a guy that really wants to be on a million teams in my tenure in the league and I just want to create a dynasty and a legacy here in Phoenix with [Deandre Ayton], [Devin Booker], [Mikal Bridges], all the guys in the locker room. It’s beautiful.
“I’m just so happy that Phoenix, James [Jones] made the call and traded for me to come to Phoenix man because that was the biggest blessing of my career so far. One-hundred percent I would love to remain in Phoenix. The money and all that stuff is above my head right now. I’m just trying to focus on these last 17 games so that I can prove myself and show that I’m worth every penny thrown at me.”
In 34 games with the Suns, Kelly Oubre Jr. is averaging 16.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 44.2 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Phoenix is only 14-51 on the season, but they defeated the best team in the NBA on Monday, the Milwaukee Bucks. Oubre had a monster game, as he finished with 27 points and 13 boards.
