The Phoenix City Council approved a controversial deal with the Phoenix Suns that will keep the NBA franchise in downtown Phoenix through at least 2037.What is the deal?
-
Phoenix pays $150 million for arena renovations.
-
Suns pay $80 million for renovations and any cost overruns.
-
After the renovation, Phoenix will pay $2 million annually for 12 ½ years into a new renewal and replacement fund, which will be used for future renovation needs.
-
Suns will pay $1 million into the new fund for 12 ½ years.
The Suns reportedly have one of the worst practice facilities in the NBA. This new bill will help the franchise create new facilities, along with other stadium improvements.
The deal, though, isn't going to help the Suns become a better team on the court. Maybe the new arena will help lure some free agents in the future, but at the end of the day, it will still come down to the front office in Phoenix to improve the roster around star shooting guard Devin Booker.
The Suns are 11-38 on the season. They have the worst record in the Western Conference.
