Though the first days of the regular season are upon them, the Phoenix Suns are still without a starting-caliber point guard. It's certainly an issue, but head coach Igor Kokoskov is confident his team can fill the position by committee.

“We don’t have one guy that we designate as the starting point guard and we’re trying to turn it into a strength of this team,” Kokoskov said in an interview on Monday.

According to several reports, former Suns general manager Ryan McDonough went after a few point guards on the market, but no deal came to fruition. James Jones, who recently took over as interim general manager in Phoenix, signed Jamal Crawford to a veteran's minimum deal on Monday.

The Suns do have several players who can handle the ball, including Isaiah Canaan, De’Anthony Melton and Elie Okobo. Coach Kokoskov, however, is simply looking for his play-makers to step up.

“There’s a couple of guys who can take that role,” Kokoskov said. “We also know that guys like [Deandre] Ayton, [Devin] Booker and a couple other vets are going to take the role when it comes to the play-making, somebody who can make a play for other people on the court.

“So that doesn’t mean necessarily it’s going to be point guard.”

Kokoskov has previously stated that he will rotate Booker in at point guard, but he doesn't want to overexert him.

“We ask him to do so much and he’s accepting the challenge,” Kokoskov said of Booker. “I don’t want to waste our best offensive weapon to guard point guards necessarily. He’s going to score for us, he’s going to defend obviously.

“He’s going to play some stretches, some games and we’re going to try also to incorporate other guys who can help us at the point guard position.”

The Suns kick off their regular-season campaign on Wednesday night with a matchup against the Dallas Mavericks. Tip-off inside Talking Stick Resort Arena is set for 10:30 p.m. ET with ESPN having live broadcast coverage.
