Sacramento Kings young star De’Aaron Fox has been promoted to USA Basketball's main roster, boasting a good chance to make the final 12-man cut, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
Fox had been among the top names rumored to move up in the wake of so many dropouts from the initial 20-man list. USA Basketball has called up more than 50 players for this process, getting a “no” from several stars, including the likes of James Harden, Anthony Davis and Bradley Beal.
Fox is entering his third year in the league and showed no signs of a sophomore slump in 2018-19, improving his form from his rookie year and helping catapult the Kings into hopeful playoff contention, despite the notable dip late in the season.
Team USA is thin at the point guard position, so Fox could battle for a roster spot with only Kemba Walker and Kyle Lowry as his current competition at that spot. Walker is currently the best of the three, fresh off three All-Star selections and an All-NBA nod this past season.
Lowry has yet to get word from his doctors about a thumb injury he chose to play with this past postseason, but even if he is cleared to play, any sign of that injury impacting his play would push him to a mentorship role instead of Walker's immediate backup.
Fox possesses demonic speed, great ability to handle the ball and improved vision. Those assets, along with his athleticism, should play a great part in Team USA's plan of attack if he makes the cut moving forward.
