The Golden State Warriors opened their season against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night looking to start their campaign on a high note while parading their prized recruit of the summer, Kevin Durant.
But Kawhi Leonard had other plans and crashed the party.
The reigning two-time Defensive Player of the Year led all scorers and dropped a career-high 35 points as the Spurs routed the Warriors 129-100. He scored in a variety of ways including transition layups, mid-range jumpers, and going 15-of-15 from the free-throw line.
Tuesday night's win marks the Spurs' first victory at Oracle Arena in almost two years. Durant led the way for the Warriors scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. But his effort was not enough as Leonard received a lot of help from LaMarcus Aldridge who scored 26 points and Jonathon Simmons adding 20 points off the bench.
Article Continues BelowSteve Kerr‘s team seemed lost throughout the game and appeared to still be looking for their new identity. They committed 16 turnovers and shot a terrible 7-of-33 from beyond the three-point line. The Warriors led briefly 16-12 but the Spurs made a run to take the lead from them and never trailed after.
The good news for the Bay Area faithful is that it's still very early in the season and they have a lot of time to improve and start winning games. If they'll be able to string some W's together, it will boost the Warriors' morale and may lead to an extended winning streak.
The Spurs, on the other hand, look to continue to build on the momentum they created when they face the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.
