Without a doubt, DeMar DeRozan is going to bring plenty to the San Antonio Spurs’ table. DeRozan was the top prize the Spurs got after finally parting ways with Kawhi Leonard by trading the embattled forward to the Toronto Raptors along with Danny Green. Apart from DeRozan, the Spurs also got young big man Jakob Poeltl and a future draft pick.
When asked by Chris Haynes of ESPN what the Spurs are getting from the All-Star guard, DeRozan responded by narrating some intangible qualities (h/t Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints).

“A guy that has been proven to prove himself time and time again. This time around, having the biggest chip on his shoulder ever, that I didn’t have in my career, where I carried that over and play for a championship. Period.”
DeRozan did not mention it, but he’s going to replace whatever scoring the Spurs are going to miss due to Leonard’s departure. DeRozan has averaged 24.5 points on 45.7 percent shooting from the field over the last three seasons. In his final season wearing a Raptors jersey, he put up 23.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. His ability to create his own shots and get to the free throw line often will be valuable to the Spurs. DeRozan finished fourth last season in free throw makes with 461.
Where DeMar DeRozan might fall short of filling an area of Leonard’s expertise is on defense. But while Leonard is generally perceived as the best perimeter defender in the game today, at least DeRozan is willing to play for San Antonio.
