The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived Brandon Paul a little over one year after signing him as a free agent.
The 6-foot-4 guard nicknamed ‘BP3' only appeared in 64 games for the Spurs last season, averaging 2.3 points and 1.1 rebounds in 9.0 minutes. He did have a number of impressive outings when given the opportunity, putting up 18 points and five rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting against the Boston Celtics, as well as his 15-point, five-rebound, four-assist game against the Chicago Bulls early in the year as well. The only issue for him is that he was far down the depth chart and didn't get enough opportunity to showcase his talents.
This is the first move the San Antonio Spurs have made since trading away franchise cornerstone Kawhi Leonard, as well as Danny Green, to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for star guard DeMar DeRozan and young center Jakob Poeltl. The move now trims the Spurs roster down to 14 players, leaving one roster spot open. They also have center Matt Costello signed to one of their two two-way contract slots as well.
It's very much possible that Paul finds another team interested in him soon, but with the majority of free agency finished, a lot of teams could also opt to keep a roster spot open until the middle of the year when they can see a more glaring hole to fill.
