The regular season is set to enter its final stretch of games, there still doesn't appear to be any resolution met to the situation surrounding All-Star forward Kawhi Leonards health. He has continued to remain out of the lineup with a quadriceps injury that has led to him to visit doctors in New York once again for the second time this season to address the issue.
All of this has seemingly placed an ever-growing cloud of uncertainty around Leonard's future in San Antonio. The current status of the situation has led ESPN's Rachel Nichols to speculate that the 26-year-old could be put on the trade block this offseason if a new extension isn't worked out.
Article Continues Below“If Kawhi and the Spurs cannot reach an extension, you will see Kawhi on the trade block. I do not expect San Antonio to just let him play out the final year of his current and just watch him walk away. Of course, all this could get resolved quickly and silently. Remember, it was just last summer that Aldridge asked to be traded. Pop turned that situation around with some compromise and a bottle of Chianti. But at least as of right now, we're not there with Leonard and one of the most reliable organizations in sports, it continues to be weirdly, strangely anything but.”
If Leonard finishes the season out of the lineup, this will only heighten the contract extension talks that will take place at some point this upcoming offseason. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year is in line to potentially garner a super-max contract worth around $219 million over five years.
This may come down to the Spurs' willingness to offer Leonard that type of deal, which could quickly go south if the team doesn't feel comfortable committing that amount of money to him. If so, there will be plenty of teams lined up to acquire his services such as his hometown Los Angeles Lakers, who are a team that will have a plethora of cap space to offer him a general max contract while possessing some young attractive pieces to offer the Spurs to work out a trade.
Beyond that, there will be several other intriguing offers that could be on the table for one of the game's best two-way players that is just entering the prime of his career. All of this just shifts toward what should be crucial summer for the Spurs that could have a tremendous impact on their future outlook.
