The Toronto Raptors are going to bat for All-Star power forward Kawhi Leonard.

According to Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star, the Raptors reached out to the league office recently and made a case that Kawhi Leonard gets fewer foul calls because he doesn't complain and whine like other superstars do.

Sources say the Raptors also made a private case to the league office to plant a seed for future consideration. In a league infamous for star players who complain about nearly every call, the club used years of data to argue the stoic Leonard draws fewer fouls because he mostly opts for silent perseverance over petulant protest. In other words, he doesn’t complain, so he doesn’t get calls. The Raptors, who are aiming at a deep playoff run while sporting the league’s best record, are hoping such a perceived double standard doesn’t persist as the games get bigger.

Leonard is averaging almost seven free-throw attempts per game this season. Raptors head coach Nick Nurse was recently fined $15,000 for blasting the referees of their treatment of Leonard after Toronto lost to the Denver Nuggets.

Leonard is arguably the quietest superstar the NBA has ever seen. He doesn't flop to get calls and rarely ever speaks to the refs during games. The Raptors are trying to make a case to the league that Leonard's lack of engagement with the refs is a big reason why he doesn't get calls that stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant and James Harden get.
