It’s been over a week since the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 people killed. Since then, plenty of personalities have given their takes about this tragedy, and among the latest figures to speak about it is Miami Heat shooting guard Dwyane Wade. Just like his basketball buddy, Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, Wade is not one to just shut up and dribble.

Just before Saturday night’s tip-off between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Heat at home, Wade took to the mic and made a short speech in front of thousands in attendance for the ball game, expressing the thoughts of the entire Heat organization with regards to the incident and the continuing fight for gun safety.

Tonight, we honor the 17 lives that were tragically lost in Parkland. We applaud the fearless students that are fighting for their lives. We all should make sure that their voices are heard around gun safety. You are our nation’s inspiration. We salute you, and we support you.

While Wade’s speech was not as poignant as that of fellow Florida sports star, Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers, hearing one of this generation’s best basketball players speak about the incident has definitely helped lift plenty of spirits in a state that is still shocked by the senseless loss of students’ lives.

Apart from being a gifted athlete, Dwyane Wade is also known for being vocal about social issues, so it was, to a degree, expected that he would address the tragedy publicly.
