The FBI is going to leave a wake of destruction in college sports by the time it is all said and done. The feds are going to be able to do this, at least largely, because shoe companies are trying like hell to have power in the realm of unpaid labor. A thing not shocking since people know about the sweat shops.
Not all are too concerned about the FBI finding their way to every programs' doorsteps. Georgia Tech football coach Paul Johnson, in fact, is now thrilled that he has pretty awful uniforms.
Paul Johnson: “When the FBI/CBB stuff broke, for once in my life, I said I'm glad we're with Russell Athletic.”
The man known for still trotting about big boy college football while running a traditional form of the option has jokes. Good jokes.
However, it is easy to imagine Russell Athletics not exactly being thrilled wit his comments. I don't think Paul Johnson was implying that clothing apparel company doesn't cheat. Instead, it is more likely he was making fun of the fact, even if it was partly as his own expense, that Georgia Tech is one of the few major programs in the country not connected to one of the big time shoe companies.
Say what you want about Johnson, his offense, or if he will be able to last at Georgia Tech for many more years. For at least a few hours, during a time of great upheaval, he made a funny. And I laughed.
