College football fans hopeful to catch the Military Bowl matchup between Boston College and East Carolina will be sorely disappointed following the latest COVID update for the game. According to college football insider Bruce Feldman, the Military Bowl has been cancelled due to COVID-related issues.

The matchup was set to take place on Monday, Dec. 27, however, the virus took its toll on Boston College, who wouldn't be able to field a team due to the amount of positive tests, injuries, and opt outs on the team. Feldman reports as many as 42 players would have been unavailable for Boston College, making the clash against ECU virtually unplayable.

Boston College earned a spot in the Military Bowl after a 6-6 season despite having ended the year with back-to-back losses. Unfortunately they won't get the chance to take home the Military Bowl trophy due to the serious nature of the outbreak of COVID-19 within the program.

East Carolina finished the year with a 7-5 record overall, having gone 5-3 in conference play. They were defeated in the American Conference Championship against Cincinnati, who are set to take on Alabama in the College Football Playoff. After a 3-4 start to the year, ECU rallied four consecutive victories prior to meeting Cinci, in what was a strong second half of the year for Mike Houston's squad.

Unfortunately their clash with Houston will be their final taste of game action this season, and for the seniors set to graduate, it'll have been their last time playing in a college football game. It's a shame the bowl game was canceled, though preserving the health and safety of the players is paramount.
