Tom Herman must love himself some New York Yankees, as the Texas Longhorns coach used one of the more dated references available to him to discuss Shane Buechele's current situation.
Backing up a bit, Shane Buechele got injured during the team's opening game of the season. At the time, Herman said that when he was healthy, he would be gaining his job back.
This week, Buechele came back to practice and reports have stated that he's taken the majority of the first string reps. After the latest practice, Herman went on to his his shoehorned reference. The first-year UT head coach pronounced that there’s “[n]o Wally Pipp for the moment.”
For those unaware, Wally Pipp might not be a household name today, or at least not for the right reasons, but he is considered one of the better power hitters of the dead ball era in baseball. If nothing else in today's world, he's known as the man who lost his starting job to Lou Gehrig, who then went on to play in approximately a billion games in a row.

“Thought both of them looked good,” Herman said according to the American-Statesman. “I asked Shane towards the end of practice and he said, ‘Coach I feel good.’ So we’ll continue to monitor his progress. Last week, he was a bit sore each day after throwing. But with a couple of days off here, hopefully we can get that soreness out.”
Texas would be thrilled if Buechele is half as good as Pipp was.
