He became the first Ohio senator without previous government experience since 1974 after winning 53 percent of the vote.

Trump's decision on the vice presidency was a major topic of discussion for months. Vance ended up beating out other big names like Vivek Ramaswamy, Doug Burgum, and Marco Rubio.
Vance and Trump were originally running against President Joe Biden, the Democrat nominee, however after a poor debate against Trump, Biden dropped out of the race in July 2024 amid health and age concerns.
Biden supported Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democrat nominee. Harris became the nominee but did not go through the normal primary process.
