Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant opened up the trade floodgates when he announced that he would like to be dealt to another team back in June. Given his stature as a superstar, Durant's trade value was expected to be perhaps the highest the league has ever seen. The Nets have certainly been seeking ‘Godfather-type' offers for the two-time NBA Finals MVP, but little traction has seemingly been made with Durant suitors.
As NBA reporter Marc Stein points out, interested teams, like the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat, simply don't have enough assets to get the deal done. However, Stein also revealed a bigger reason why no deal has been done yet.
Article Continues BelowSome of it can be attributed to the fact that Durant's most desired destinations — Phoenix and Miami — are contending teams less than flush with the sort of trade assets that the Nets covet. The persistent scuttle around the league, though, is that clubs interested in Durant mostly fear their ability to keep him content more than they feel any concern about his advancing age.
“If the Nets can't keep him happy, after everything they've given him, how are we supposed to?” one Western Conference team official told me.
Per Stein, interested teams are afraid that they won't be able to keep Kevin Durant happy. Stein quotes one team official wondering aloud how they're supposed to keep the star forward happy when the Nets clearly couldn't.
It's certainly a valid concern. The superstar trio of Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving went up in flames- leaving some question marks surrounding each of the three.
Kevin Durant is one of the best players in the NBA. As talented as he is, the unpredictability surrounding his mood and what he truly wants sems to be hurting his trade value.
