The Brooklyn Nets turned to a veteran swingman in Iman Shumpert to fill in the last few spots on their roster after the blockbuster trade to acquire James Harden back in mid-January. However, Shams Charania of The Athletic revealed that the Nets also considered signing another veteran in Andre Roberson who is expected to bring his defensive prowess and leadership to the team.

Roberson last saw action with the Oklahoma City Thunder back in the Orlando Bubble where he contributed 2.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 12.4 minutes through seven appearances. He concluded a six-year stint in Oklahoma City where he previously teamed up with Kevin Durant and was named to the All-Defensive Second Team back in 2017 before becoming a free agent.

Indeed, the defensive end remains to be one of the biggest weaknesses of the Nets squad after the Harden trade. They previously gave up big man Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert, and Rodions Kurucs in a bid to shore up their offensive firepower with the acquisition of the 2018 NBA MVP.

Though Harden's arrival definitely boosted the team, it can't be denied that a championship-caliber team needs balance on both ends of the floor in order to vie for a long postseason run. In fact, the Nets have recently collapsed in several late-game situations after failing to execute on the defensive end which resulted in narrow losses.

Shumpert has yet to log a minute since coming over to the Nets camp back in late January. The Nets could have inked a savvy veteran like Roberson who can ramp up their capability to defend the ball instead.

Despite not getting signed by the Nets, Andre Roberson can certainly serve as a low-risk, high-reward type of acquisition for any team in the league.
